The Phalaenopsis is one of the best orchids for growing in your house. Although it requires higher light than most houseplants, its light requirements are actually low compared to other orchids. The Phalaenopsis has large, fleshy, long, green leaves, and beautiful “moth-like” flowers arising on a flower spike. A Phalaenopsis will flower regularly once a year, and it will stay in bloom for 3-6 months. A 10-15 degree drop in temperatures from day to night will encourage spike formation and re-blooming of your Phalaenopsis. One of the most difficult aspects of Phals is that they are prone to crown and rot root. To prevent crown rot, make sure that water does not collect in the crown of the leaves. To prevent root rot, make sure that the potting medium does not become too wet, and that it does not break down. When the potting medium of Phals breaks down, it can lead to root rot, so to prevent this, be sure to replace your potting medium with fresh medium every 1-2 years.
